Jacob

Michael was already half sloshed when Jacob walked into Shifter’s Paradise the next night. Jacob had no respect for the man and intended to avoid him like the plague. However, Michael had other ideas.

He sauntered over to Jacob’s table and slid into one of the chairs.

“How are ya doin’, boy?”

Jacob was instantly irritated by the sight of Zoe’s father. In spite of this, he was determined to treat the old man with respect.

“I’m fine, sir. I hope that you are as well,” Jacob replied.

“I’m doing great, now that Zoe and Daniel’s mating ceremony date has been settled. She has finally agreed to go through with it. She went to our clan’s ball last night with Daniel,” Michael said.

Jacob’s heart sank. He knew that when the alpha took a woman to the ball, especially when there were already plans being discussed, that it was basically an announcement that everything was official.

“I hope that they both had a great time,” Jacob managed to say.

“You know what this means. You need to stay away from my daughter,” Michael informed him. “I know you got a thing for her, but she’s promised to another and has been for a very long time.”

Jacob didn’t say anything. He just waited for the old man to say his piece and leave him alone.

“Besides, you didn’t think that it would really work out, did you? She’s a wolf shifter and you’re a bear shifter. Shifters just need to stay with their own kind,” Michael said.

What a pig, Jacob thought.

“Did ya hear me, boy?” Michael said.

Jacob really hated to be called boy, and he hated the condescending tone in Michael’s voice. He really wanted to throat punch him.

Instead, he simply said, “I hear you.”

Now go away and leave me the hell alone.

Michael must have picked up on his thoughts because he laughed, stood up, and staggered back to his chair.

Ember came over and asked, “What was that all about?”

“He came over to tell me that Zoe went to their clan’s banquet and ball last night and that I should stay away from Zoe,” Jacob said.

“I see,” Ember said, clearly heartbroken at the news. “She told me that she had no intentions of going through the mating ceremony with him.”

“She told me the same thing. Something must have happened,” Jacob said.

Jacob made a point of not calling Zoe over the next week. He figured that if she wasn’t going to be honest with him, he wasn’t even going to make an effort to talk to her. He also made a point of changing the times when he normally went for his run so that he wouldn’t run into her in the meadow or on the trail that he normally took. When he did go out to run, he avoided the meadow all together.

She called him a couple of times, but he chose not to answer. He didn’t want to hear any more of her lies, and he figured that she would eventually get the point that he no longer wanted to associate with her.
